Would Do

The conditional means would: გავაკეთებდი (I would do it), წავიდოდი (I would go).

How It Works

The endings are the imperfect's: -დი for I and you, -და for he or she, -დით for we and you all, -დნენ for they. Some verbs change the stem a little, so learn წავიდოდი with წავალ.

The conditional is in the present group, so its object is dative: ახალ მანქანას ვიყიდდი (I would buy a new car).

It has three everyday jobs:

  • the result of an imagined if: ფული რომ მქონდეს, ვიყიდდი (if I had money, I would buy it);
  • a polite wish: სიამოვნებით წავიდოდი (I'd be glad to go);
  • a future seen from the past: ლუკამ თქვა, რომ დაგვირეკავდა (Luka said he would call us).

Examples (4)

  1. სიამოვნებით წავიდოდი, მაგრამ დრო არ მაქვს.

    I'd be glad to go, but I don't have time.

    A polite wish.

  2. ახლა ყავას დავლევდი.

    I'd love a coffee right now.

    The object is dative: ყავას.

  3. ლუკამ თქვა, რომ ხვალ დაგვირეკავდა.

    Luka said he would call us tomorrow.

    A plan told from the past.

  4. შენს ადგილზე ამას არ გავაკეთებდი.

    If I were you, I wouldn't do this.

    შენს ადგილზე: in your place.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a nominative object.

    ახლა ყავა დავლევდი.
    ახლა ყავას დავლევდი.
