შემეძლო/შევძლებ
Could and Will Be Able
შემეძლო means I could, and შევძლებ means I will be able to.
How It Works
შემიძლია (I can) has a past and a future that are built differently:
| Person | Can | Could | Will be able |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | შემიძლია | შემეძლო | შევძლებ |
| you | შეგიძლია | შეგეძლო | შეძლებ |
| he, she | შეუძლია | შეეძლო | შეძლებს |
| we | შეგვიძლია | შეგვეძლო | შევძლებთ |
The past შემეძლო (shemedzlo) works like a feeling verb, with მ- for I and the person in the dative: ნინოს შეეძლო (Nino could). The action is a verbal noun in the nominative: ბავშვობაში ცურვა არ შემეძლო (I couldn't swim as a child).
The future შევძლებ (shevdzleb) is an ordinary doing verb, with ვ- for I. The action is a verbal noun with -ს, because it is the object of a future verb: ვერ შევძლებ მოსვლას (I won't be able to come).
