შეიძლება
May I
შეიძლება asks for or gives permission: შეიძლება? means may I?
How It Works
შეიძლება (sheidzleba) is a polite word you will use every day. It does not change for the person, so it is easy to use.

| შეიძლება? | May I? |
| შემოსვლა შეიძლება? | May I come in? |
| დიახ, შეიძლება. | Yes, you may. |
| აქ მოწევა არ შეიძლება. | Smoking is not allowed here. |
To say what you want to do, use a verbal noun: შემოსვლა (coming in), მოწევა (smoking). It goes before შეიძლება.
You can also ask for a thing: შეიძლება ერთი ჭიქა წყალი? (Could I have a glass of water?)
Signs use არ შეიძლება for not allowed. Later you will learn another use: შეიძლება with another verb form means maybe.
