სანამ ... არ
Until
სანამ with არ before the verb means until.
How It Works
| სანამ: before | სანამ ... არ: until |
|---|---|
| სანამ წახვალ, დამირეკე. (Call me before you go.) | სანამ არ დაგირეკავ, აქ დამელოდე. (Wait for me here until I call you.) |
| სანამ ჭამას დაიწყებ, ხელები დაიბანე. (Wash your hands before you start eating.) | სანამ ვახშამს არ შეჭამ, ნაყინს ვერ მიიღებ. (You won't get ice cream until you eat your dinner.) |
The არ in the სანამ (sanam) clause does not make the event negative. Think of it as as long as ... has not happened: სანამ ნინო არ მოვა means as long as Nino hasn't come, which is until Nino comes.
For a coming event, the verb after სანამ is in the future, as in სანამ არ მოვა. For a past event, it is in the aorist: სანამ არ დაბნელდა, ეზოში ვთამაშობდით (we played in the yard until it got dark).
The main clause can be positive or negative: დამელოდე (wait for me) and არ წავალ (I won't leave) both work.
