როცა

When, Joining Clauses

Level 3Sounds Like rotsa

როცა (rotsa) means when and joins two clauses.

How It Works

როცა (rotsa) joins two clauses and says when something happens:

  • როცა თბილისში ვარ, ხინკალს ვჭამ (when I'm in Tbilisi, I eat khinkali)
  • როცა სახლში დავბრუნდი, ჩაი დავლიე (when I got home, I had some tea)

როდესაც (rodesats) means the same and is used more in writing.

Do not use როცა in questions. To ask when, use (when will you come?)

For something still to come, Georgian puts the როცა clause in the future, where English uses the present: როცა ჩამოხვალ, დამირეკე (when you arrive, call me). Word for word, it says when you will arrive.

The როცა clause can come first or second: ნინო მღერის, როცა საჭმელს აკეთებს (Nino sings when she cooks).

Examples (5)

When I'm in Tbilisi, I eat khinkali.

    როცა starts the time clause.

When I got home, I had some tea.

    Both clauses in the past.

    When you arrive, call me.

    ჩამოხვალ is in the future.

Nino always sings when she cooks.

    The როცა clause comes second.

When the concert ended, everyone stood up.

    როდესაც, the formal word.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the question word როდის to join clauses.

როდის asks a question. To join two clauses, use როცა.
