სა-...-ად (Purpose)
In Order to, In Writing
A future participle in -ად states a purpose: წერილის გასაგზავნად (to send a letter).
How It Works
To say in order to in a careful style, take the future participle and give it the ending -ად. The final -ი drops, and -ელი becomes -ლ-:
| Participle | Purpose |
|---|---|
| გასაგზავნი (to be sent) | გასაგზავნად (to send) |
| სანახავი (to be seen) | სანახავად (to see) |
| დასასვენებელი (for rest) | დასასვენებლად (to rest) |
The object of the action goes in the genitive in front: წერილის გასაგზავნად (to send a letter), ქართული ენის შესასწავლად (to learn Georgian). A pronoun takes its genitive form: მის სანახავად (to see her).
This form is common after verbs of going and coming: ზაფხულში ზღვაზე დასასვენებლად მივდივართ (in summer we go to the sea for a rest).
In conversation, people often use რომ and the optative: ფოსტაში მივდივარ, რომ წერილი გავაგზავნო (I'm going to the post office to send a letter).
