ყოფილა
It Turns Out It Was
ყოფილა, the perfect of to be, says something turned out to be so: ძალიან გემრიელი ყოფილა! (It's really delicious!)
How It Works
ყოფილა (q'opila) is the perfect of to be. Its most common use is surprise at what you have just found out:
- ძალიან გემრიელი ყოფილა! (It's really delicious!) You have just tried it.
- შენ თურმე ქართველი ყოფილხარ! (So you're Georgian!) You have just learned it.
English uses the present here. Georgian uses the perfect, because the fact is news to you.
It also reports a past state or event that you did not witness: გუშინ ქალაქში დიდი ხანძარი ყოფილა (apparently there was a big fire in town yesterday).
With არ, it says something turned out not to be so: ფილმი ისეთი კარგი არ ყოფილა, როგორც მეგონა (the film wasn't as good as I thought).
The other persons are ვყოფილვარ, ყოფილხარ and ყოფილან, the same forms as in the Have You Been? topic.
