-ის მსგავსად
Like, Similar to
After a genitive, მსგავსად means like or in the same way as, in careful speech and writing.
How It Works
მსგავსი (msgavsi) means similar. With the adverb ending -ად it becomes მსგავსად: like, in the same way as. The thing you compare with goes in the genitive:
- სხვა ქალაქების მსგავსად (like other cities)
- წინა წლების მსგავსად (as in previous years)
- მამის მსგავსად (like his father)
The phrase usually opens the sentence, and the word that shares the feature often takes -ც (too): მამის მსგავსად, ლუკაც ექიმია (like his father, Luka is a doctor too).
It sounds a little formal and is common in news and reports. In conversation, -ივით (Level 4) is the usual like: მამასავით ექიმია (he's a doctor like his dad).
Keep the -ად. Without it, მსგავსი is a describing word that goes with a noun: მამის მსგავსი ბიჭი is a boy who looks like his father.
Examples (4)
- სხვა ქალაქების მსგავსად, ქუთაისშიც ბევრი ახალი კაფე გაიხსნა.

The cities you compare with are in the plural genitive.
- წინა წლების მსგავსად, რთველი სექტემბერში დაიწყება.
As in previous years, the grape harvest will start in September.
მსგავსად can compare times as well as things.
- მამის მსგავსად, ლუკაც ექიმია.
Like his father, Luka is a doctor too.
Luka shares the feature, so he takes -ც.

Like many Georgians, Nino loves polyphonic singing.
-ც goes on the dative ნინოს: ნინოსაც.
