-ობა (Abstract Nouns)
Nouns in -ობა
-ობა makes nouns for states and times of life: მეგობრობა (friendship), ბავშვობა (childhood).
How It Works
-ობა (-oba) turns a word for a person into a word for being that person, or for that time of life:
| Word | With -ობა |
|---|---|
| ბავშვი (child) | ბავშვობა (childhood) |
| მეგობარი (friend) | მეგობრობა (friendship) |
| სტუდენტი (student) | სტუდენტობა (student days) |
| ახალგაზრდა (young person) | ახალგაზრდობა (youth) |
| მეზობელი (neighbor) | მეზობლობა (being neighbors) |
The final -ი of the base word drops, and so does the -ა of ახალგაზრდა. A word that loses a vowel in other cases loses it here too: მეგობარი, მეგობრის, მეგობრობა.
These nouns end in -ა, so they take endings like დედა: ბავშვობაში (in childhood), სტუდენტობის დროს (in my student days).
A village's yearly feast day is also called დღეობა.
