tiel + Adjective or Adverb + ke + Clause

So ... That

Level 4

Tiel or tia says how much, and ke gives the result.

How It Works

StartExampleMeaning
tiel + adjective or adverbLa supo estas tiel varma, ke mi ne povas manĝi ĝin.The soup is so hot that I cannot eat it.
tia + nounEstis tia bruo, ke neniu povis dormi. There was such noise that nobody could sleep.
tiomWei laboris tiom, ke li ne havis tempon por ripozi.Wei worked so much that he had no time to rest.

The ke clause names a fact, so its verb has an ordinary tense: -as, -is or -os. Compare the pattern tro ... por, which uses an infinitive and says "too ... to".

A comma separates the two parts. Ke is not left out here: without it the two parts would be glued together with only a comma.

Examples (5)

  1. Hiro parolis tiel rapide, ke mi ne komprenis lin.

Hiro spoke so fast that I did not understand him.

Tiel rapide says how fast, and the ke clause gives the result.

  2. Estis tia bruo, ke neniu povis dormi.

There was such noise that nobody could sleep.

Tia goes with the noun bruo.

  3. La supo estas tiel varma, ke mi ne povas manĝi ĝin.

The soup is so hot that I cannot eat it.

The result is a fact, so the verb is povas.

  4. Wei laboris tiom, ke li ne havis tempon por ripozi.

Wei worked so much that he had no time to rest.

Tiom shows an amount of work.

  5. Mi estas tiel laca, ke mi tuj dormos.

I am so tired that I will go to sleep right away.

The ke clause can name something that will happen.

Common Mistakes

  • Using kiel for "that".

La supo estas tiel varma, kiel mi ne povas manĝi ĝin.
La supo estas tiel varma, ke mi ne povas manĝi ĝin.

The result clause starts with ke. Kiel would start a comparison.

  • Leaving ke out.

La supo estas tiel varma, mi ne povas manĝi ĝin.
La supo estas tiel varma, ke mi ne povas manĝi ĝin.

Without ke the sentence is two sentences joined by a comma. The result is introduced by ke.
