kia / tia

What Kind and That Kind

Level 3

Kia asks about a kind, and tia answers.

How It Works

WordMeaningExample
kiawhat kind ofKia vetero estas hodiaŭ?
tiathat kind of, suchTia vetero estas bona.

Kia asks about the kind and kiu asks which one. Kiu libro asks which book from a set, and kia libro asks what kind of book.

Both words take -j and -n like any adjective: kiaj homoj, tian libron, kiajn librojn. They already point to a kind, so they do not take la.

The answer to kia describes the kind: Kia estas via domo? Ĝi estas granda.
