hi (complements no introduïts per de)

Hi for a, En, Amb and Other Non-De Complements

Level 6

Hi can replace appropriate verb complements introduced by a, en, amb and other prepositions apart from de.

How It Works

Some verbs require a preposition as part of their construction: pensar en el problema, renunciar al càrrec. When that complement is understood, hi can replace it: hi penso, hi renuncio. Hi therefore does not always mean there.

Complements governed by amb and other non-de prepositions can also be represented by hi in appropriate constructions: compto amb aquest suport becomes hi compto. The choice remains lexical and functional, not a rule that every prepositional phrase must collapse to hi. A personal recipient, an agent phrase or a freely added explanation can behave differently. Reconstruct the full expression before choosing between hi, en, li or an explicit phrase.

  2. S'hi oposen per principi.

    They oppose it on principle.

  3. Hi col·laboren des de fa anys.

They have been collaborating in it for years.
