Verbs Governing En and Amb
Learn en and amb as part of the governing verb’s construction.
How It Works
Pensar en, confiar en and participar en introduce their topic, trusted thing or activity with en. Comptar amb and col·laborar amb use amb for a resource, person or organization. English prepositions cannot reliably predict these Catalan choices.
A recovered nonpersonal complement can often become hi: hi confio, hi compto. Keep personal reference clear when a full stressed pronoun or another construction is more natural. Pronominal verbs must retain their reflexive element as well as the required complement.
Before infinitives and finite que clauses, formal usage may adjust or drop some governed prepositions. Learn the noun-complement construction first, then apply the relevant clause rule instead of assuming the same surface preposition survives everywhere.
