Basic Preposition Amb

Amb links an action or noun to company, an accompaniment or an instrument.

How It Works

Use amb for company: vinc amb tu means I am coming with you. After the preposition, use a strong pronoun such as mi, tu or ell: amb mi, amb tu, amb ell. Do not substitute the weak object pronoun em in this position.

With a noun, amb can identify what accompanies it: pa amb tomàquet, cafè amb llet. With an action, it can name the instrument: escric amb llapis. The same preposition covers these related uses without needing an extra verb meaning have.

Amb is written separately and does not form the article contractions made by a, de or per. Say amb el pare or amb els amics. A following singular article may elide independently, as in amb l'Anna.
