Notices to the public use it all the time: ခရီးသည်များအား အသိပေးအပ်ပါသည် (passengers are informed).
How It Works
အား is the formal written marker for the person an action reaches. It sits right after that person: ကျောင်းသားများအား ဆုချီးမြှင့်သည်။ (Awards were given to the students.)

It goes with verbs of giving, telling, choosing, helping and thanking.
- Giving: ဆုရသူအား ဆုချီးမြှင့်သည် (they gave the winner the prize).
- Telling: ခရီးသည်များအား အသိပေးအပ်ပါသည် (passengers are informed).
- Choosing: ဒေါ်ခင်ခင်အား ရွေးချယ်ကြသည် (they chose Daw Khin Khin).
အား marks people most of the time. News also uses it for a thing that officials deal with: ယာဉ်အား ရပ်တန့်စစ်ဆေးသည် (the vehicle was stopped and searched). For everyday things, writing keeps ကို: စာအုပ်ကို ဖတ်သည်. A place never takes အား: writing uses သို့ (to) or တွင် (at).
News reports, school notices and official letters use အား often. Written stories use ကို more, and အား gives a sentence a formal, official sound.
Watch for အား in other words. On its own as a verb, အား means "to be free" (အားလား, are you free?), and အားလုံး means "everyone". After a person's name in formal writing, it is the marker taught here.

The members chose Daw Khin Khin as chair.
The person chosen is marked with အား.
- ဆုရသူက မိဘများအား ကျေးဇူးတင်ကြောင်း ပြောကြားသည်။
The winner thanked her parents.
The people thanked take အား in formal writing.
Common Mistakes
Using အား for a place.
ရန်ကုန်အား သွားသည်။ရန်ကုန်သို့ သွားသည်။အား marks people. A place you go to takes သို့.
