သာလျှင်
Only in Formal Prose
For "only if" or "only by", put မှသာလျှင် after a verb: ကြိုးစားမှသာလျှင် အောင်မြင်မည်။ (Only by trying will you succeed.)
How It Works
သာလျှင် marks the one person, thing or way that counts. It follows the word it limits.
| Style | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| formal prose | သာလျှင် | ဤနည်းသာလျှင် |
| everyday writing | သာ | ဤနည်းသာ |
| speech | ပဲ | ဒီနည်းပဲ |
With a verb, add မှ first: verb + မှသာလျှင် means "only if" or "only by". The main clause says what then follows: ကြိုးစားမှသာလျှင် အောင်မြင်မည် means you will succeed only if you try. This matches spoken မှ (only when).
သာလျှင် contains လျှင်, the written "if", and learners often read it as a condition. Here it means "only". Look at what comes before it: a noun or မှ.
Rules and notices use it to limit who may enter or what is allowed: only ticket holders may enter. Speeches and essays use it to stress the one way forward. In plain news, a single သာ is enough; သာလျှင် sounds more formal and more firm.
A number phrase works the same way, with its counting word first: ဆိုင်တစ်ဆိုင်သာလျှင် means only one shop.
