တင်မက / သာမက
Not Only … but Also
With a verb, add ရုံ first: ဆိုရုံတင်မက means "not only sings".
How It Works
တင်မက means "not only". The second item takes လည်း (also), so the sentence reads "not only A, but also B": မုန့်ဟင်းခါးတင်မက ရှမ်းခေါက်ဆွဲလည်း ရတယ်။ (They have not only mohinga but also Shan noodles.)
It works with nouns and with actions.
- After a noun: ကလေးတွေတင်မက လူကြီးတွေလည်း (not only children but adults too).
- After a verb, add ရုံ (just) first: သီချင်းဆိုရုံတင်မက ဂီတာလည်း တီးတတ်တယ် (he doesn't just sing; he plays the guitar too).
| Speech | Writing |
|---|---|
| ကလေးတွေတင်မက လူကြီးတွေလည်း ကြိုက်တယ်။ | ကလေးများသာမက လူကြီးများလည်း နှစ်သက်ကြသည်။ |
| ချက်ရုံတင်မက | ချက်ရုံသာမက |
Always mark the second item with လည်း, or with ပါ (too): ကလေးတွေတင်မက လူကြီးတွေပါ ကြိုက်တယ်။ Without one of them, the sentence feels unfinished.
The verb at the end belongs to both items, so you say it once.
သာမက is the written form, and it also appears in careful speech such as a speech or a talk on the radio. Newspapers also write သာမကဘဲ with the same meaning.
The two items should be the same kind of thing: two languages, two dishes or two actions.
