တည်း
Alone and Only One
With a place, တစ်…တည်း means "the same": ကျွန်တော်တို့ တစ်ကျောင်းတည်း တက်ခဲ့တယ်။ (We went to the same school.)
How It Works
တည်း follows a number and its classifier. With တစ် (one), it means "only one" or "alone".
| Form | English |
|---|---|
| တစ်ယောက်တည်း | alone, by yourself |
| တစ်ခုတည်း | only one thing |
| တစ်ခါတည်း | only once; also "in one go" |
| တစ်ကျောင်းတည်း | the same school |
| နှစ်ယောက်တည်း | just the two of us |
The classifier must be there. Say တစ်ယောက်တည်း, never တစ်တည်း.
With a place or a thing used as the classifier, the meaning is "the same one": တစ်အိမ်တည်း နေတယ် (We live in the same house).
To say you did something alone and without help, ကိုယ့်ဘာသာ also fits: ကိုယ့်ဘာသာ ချက်စားတယ် (I cook for myself).
တစ်ချိန်တည်း means "at the same time": နှစ်ယောက်လုံး တစ်ချိန်တည်း ရောက်လာတယ် (The two of them arrived at the same time). With ပဲ the meaning gets stronger: တစ်ယောက်တည်းပဲ (all alone).
Ask with လား: တစ်ယောက်တည်းလား (Are you on your own?).
