After a question word, မျှ makes "no one" or "nothing": မည်သူမျှ ဒဏ်ရာ မရရှိခဲ့ပါ။ (No one was hurt.)

How It Works

မျှ makes a negative as strong as it can be: not even one. The verb is always negative, with မ.

Speech says မှ in the same place. Writing says မျှ, with a written negative ending: ပါ or ပေ, never ဘူး.

News uses it for an important zero: no one was hurt, not a single kyat is charged, not one day was missed. Notices use it to stress a rule.

You will also meet မျှ in two other news uses. After an amount with သာ, it means "only": ၁၀ ရာခိုင်နှုန်းမျှသာ (only 10 percent). After an amount on its own, it can mean "about", like ခန့်. With a negative verb and "one", it always means "not even".

The counting word stays in its usual place: လူတစ်ဦးမျှ, စာအုပ်တစ်အုပ်မျှ, မိုးတစ်စက်မျှ. Only မျှ is added after it, and then comes the negative verb.

  1. ခန်းမအတွင်း၌ လူတစ်ဦးမျှ မရှိပါ။

    There was not a single person in the hall.

    တစ်ဦးမျှ with the negative မရှိပါ means "not one person".

  2. မီးလောင်မှုတွင် မည်သူမျှ ဒဏ်ရာ မရရှိခဲ့ပါ။

    No one was hurt in the fire.

    မည်သူမျှ with a negative verb means "no one".

  3. ထိုနေ့က မိုးတစ်စက်မျှ မရွာခဲ့ပေ။

    Not one drop of rain fell that day.

    မျှ after တစ်စက် (one drop), with the written negative ပေ.

  4. သူသည် တစ်ရက်မျှ အလုပ်မပျက်ခဲ့ပါ။

    She did not miss a single day of work.

    တစ်ရက်မျှ means "not even one day"; သူ can mean he or she.

  5. ဝင်ကြေး တစ်ကျပ်မျှ ကောက်ခံခြင်း မပြုပါ။

    Not a single kyat is charged for entry.

    A notice stresses the rule with တစ်ကျပ်မျှ.

Common Mistakes

  • Using မျှ with a positive verb for "not even".

    ခန်းမအတွင်း၌ လူတစ်ဦးမျှ ရှိသည်။
    ခန်းမအတွင်း၌ လူတစ်ဦးမျှ မရှိပါ။

    "Not even one" needs a negative verb with မ.

  • Ending the written sentence with spoken ဘူး.

    လူတစ်ဦးမျှ မရှိဘူး။
    လူတစ်ဦးမျှ မရှိပါ။

    A written negative ends with ပါ or ပေ.
