For a time of day, put ခန့် after the hour, then add တွင်: နံနက် ၉ နာရီခန့်တွင် (at about 9 a.m.).

How It Works

ခန့် means "about" or "around". Put it after the full amount: the number and its counting word.

News counts people with ဦး, the written counting word for people, where speech says ယောက်. After a round number, news also drops ဦး: လူ ၅၀၀ ခန့်. Households are counted with အိမ်ခြေ: အိမ်ခြေ ၂၀၀ ခန့် is about 200 homes.

Reports use ခန့် whenever the exact figure is not yet known: how many came, how many homes were hit, how long a trip takes, how much prices rose.

Spoken လောက် also means "as much as" (သူ့လောက် မြန်တယ် means as fast as him). In writing, ခန့် after a noun gives a size: ကြက်ဥခန့် ရှိသော မိုးသီးများ means hailstones about the size of an egg. Keep it apart from the verb ခန့်မှန်း (to estimate), which starts with the same word.

Big round figures use သောင်း and သိန်း before ခန့်: ငွေကျပ်သိန်း ၅၀ ခန့် means about 5 million kyat.

    ခန့် follows a percentage.

  • Putting ခန့် before the number, as English does with "about".

    A sentence that ends with သည် takes the written ခန့်.
