ထောင် / သောင်း / သိန်း

Large Numbers and Prices

Level 2

Prices of phones and rent are often given in သိန်း, so learn this word early.

How It Works

English groups big numbers by thousands. Burmese has a word for each step.

WordValueExample

So 500,000 is ငါးသိန်း, five hundred-thousands. Never say it as "five hundred thousand" word by word.

When a smaller number follows, ဆယ်, ရာ and ထောင် take the creaky tone ့: ဆယ့်နှစ် (12), နှစ်ရာ့ငါးဆယ် (250), နှစ်ထောင့်ငါးရာ (2,500).

ခွဲ means "and a half": တစ်သောင်းခွဲ is 15,000. ကျပ် can come before or after the number: ကျပ် ၂၀၀၀ or ၂၀၀၀ ကျပ်.

When the context is clear, people leave out ကျပ်: a shop owner says ငါးထောင် for 5,000 kyats. To ask the price, say ဘယ်လောက်လဲ.

Common Mistakes

  • Building 500,000 the English way.

    ငါးရာထောင်
    ငါးသိန်း

Burmese has its own word for 100,000, so 500,000 is ငါးသိန်း.

  • Building 10,000 as "ten thousand".

    တစ်ဆယ်ထောင်
    တစ်သောင်း

10,000 has its own word, သောင်း.
