In official texts, съгласно means "in accordance with" and по силата на means "by virtue of": съгласно закона, по силата на договора.

How It Works

1. Съгласно. It takes a noun with no extra preposition and refers to laws, rules, instructions and agreements:

  • съгласно закона (in accordance with the law)
  • съгласно чл. 12 от договора (under Article 12 of the contract)
  • съгласно указанията (following the instructions)

The longer съгласно с still appears, but plain съгласно is the usual modern choice.

2. По силата на. Literally "by the force of", it names the document, decision or fact that brings about a result: по силата на договора (by virtue of the contract), по силата на решението на съда (by virtue of the court's decision). Outside legal texts it appears in по силата на навика (by force of habit). Before a clause, use по силата на това, че.

3. Not for people's opinions. For what a person thinks or says, use според: според мен (in my opinion), според лекаря (according to the doctor). Съгласно is for rules and documents only.

4. The short article. After these prepositions, a definite masculine noun takes the short article -а/-я: съгласно закона, съгласно правилника. See full versus short masculine article.

5. Style. These prepositions belong to nominal style, together with относно and с оглед на. In ordinary conversation, според or по sounds more natural: по закон (by law).

    By virtue of the court's decision, the property was returned to its owners.

  6. По силата на навика той пак стана в шест часа.

    By force of habit, he got up at six o'clock again.

Common Mistakes

  • Using съгласно for a person's opinion.

    Съгласно мен това е грешка.
    Според мен това е грешка.

    Съгласно refers to rules and documents. For a person's view, use според.

  • Dropping the article in по силата на.

    По сила на договора фирмата поема разходите.
    По силата на договора фирмата поема разходите.

    The fixed phrase is по силата на, with the article on сила.

  • Adding на after съгласно.

    Съгласно на закона всеки има право на отпуск.
    Съгласно закона всеки има право на отпуск.

    Съгласно takes its noun directly, without на.
