Short Direct Object Pronouns

To say me, you, him, her, it, us, them as the object of a verb, use the short words ме, те, го, я, ни, ви, ги: Обичам те. (I love you.)

How It Works

1. The forms.

  • аз → ме (me), ти → те (you)
  • той → го (him, it), тя → я (her, it), то → го (it)
  • ние → ни (us), вие → ви (you), те → ги (them)

2. "It" follows the noun's gender.

  • Къде е телефонът? — Не го виждам. (Where is the phone? — I don't see it.)
  • Къде е книгата? — Не я виждам. (Where is the book? — I don't see it.)
  • Къде са ключовете? — Не ги виждам. (Where are the keys? — I don't see them.)

3. Where they go. The pronoun comes right before the verb after не, ще, a subject or a question word: Аз те виждам, Ще те чакам, Кой те вика? It moves after the verb when the verb comes first, in commands and in ли-questions: Виждам те, Чакай ме!, Познаваш ли го? See placement of short pronouns.

4. Full forms. The long forms мене, тебе, него, нея, нас, вас, тях are for use after prepositions and for strong contrast: Видях него, а не нея. (I saw him, not her.) See full pronouns.

5. Do not mix them up with the indirect set. The short indirect forms ми, ти, му, ѝ, им mean to me, to you, to him and so on. Обичам те is "I love you", but ти would mean "to you".

Examples (6)

  1. Виждам те.

    I see you.

The verb opens the sentence, so те comes after it.

  2. Познаваш ли го?

    Do you know him?

  3. Къде е книгата? — Не я виждам.

Where is the book? — I don't see it.

Я refers to the feminine noun книга.

  4. Ще ви чакаме пред киното.

We will wait for you in front of the cinema.

  5. Чакай ме тук!

    Wait for me here!

  6. Обичам ги много.

    I love them very much.

Common Mistakes

  • Starting a sentence with a short pronoun.

    Те виждам.
    Виждам те.

Short pronouns cannot open a sentence. When nothing comes before the verb, put the pronoun after it.

  • Using the indirect form ѝ for "her" as a direct object.

    Виждам ѝ всеки ден.
    Виждам я всеки ден.

Виждам takes a direct object, so "her" is я. Ѝ means "to her".

  • Using ти for "you" as a direct object.

    Обичам ти.
    Обичам те.

The direct object "you" is те. Ти is the subject "you" or the indirect "to you".
