Masculine Nouns Ending in a Consonant
If a noun ends in a consonant, it is usually masculine: град (city), хляб (bread), учител (teacher).
How It Works
Every Bulgarian noun has a gender, and its last letter is usually the best clue. See noun gender.
Consonant at the end → usually masculine.
- град (city), стол (chair), хляб (bread), телефон (phone)
- учител (teacher), студент (student), брат (brother)
- Nouns in й belong here too: чай (tea), музей (museum), герой (hero)
Why it matters. Words that go with the noun take masculine forms:
- adjectives: нов град (a new city). See adjective agreement.
- един for a, one: един учител. See the number one.
- този for this: този стол (this chair).
- the article -ът/-а: градът, града. See masculine articles. Nouns in й and some others take -ят/-я: чаят.
Exceptions. Some nouns end in a consonant but are feminine, for example нощ (night), радост (joy) and любов (love). See feminine nouns ending in a consonant. A few male people end in a vowel but are masculine, like баща (father) and дядо (grandfather). See masculine nouns ending in а, я or о.

Using the feminine article -та on a masculine noun.
