मत
Don't: मत
मत plus the command form says don't.
How It Works
मत is the everyday word for don't. It changes nothing about the verb: the command form stays the same, whether it is for a friend or for a respected person.
| To | Command | Don't |
|---|---|---|
| friend | जा | मत जा। |
| friend | करऽ | हल्ला मत करऽ। |
| elder | करीं | चिंता मत करीं। |
| elder | जाईं | अबहीं मत जाईं। |
Do not mix up मत and ना. ना is used with ordinary statements: हम ना जाइब (I will not go). मत is only for telling someone not to do something.
In older speech and in songs you will meet जनि instead of मत, for example जनि जाईं. It means the same thing. Use मत when you speak.
