Level 3Sounds Like daty

A Belarusian date is literally "the first (day) of January": Сёння першае студзеня. To say on a date, change the ordinal to the genitive: першага студзеня (on January 1st).

How It Works

1. Months in the genitive.

  • студзень → студзеня (January)
  • люты → лютага (February)
  • сакавік → сакавіка (March)
  • красавік → красавіка (April)
  • травень → траўня (May)
  • чэрвень → чэрвеня (June)
  • ліпень → ліпеня (July)
  • жнівень → жніўня (August)
  • верасень → верасня (September)
  • кастрычнік → кастрычніка (October)
  • лістапад → лістапада (November)
  • снежань → снежня (December)

2. Saying what the date is. Use the neuter ordinal in the nominative: Сёння трыццаць першае снежня (Today is December 31st). See ordinal numbers.

3. Saying "on" a date. Use the genitive ordinal with no preposition: Урок будзе шостага верасня (The lesson will be on September 6th). A year after the date is genitive too, with года: трэцяга траўня дзве тысячы першага года (on May 3, 2001).

4. Writing dates. Write the day as a numeral and the month in the genitive with a small letter: 1 студзеня, 3 траўня.

Compare: for a whole month, use у with the locative: у траўні (in May). See months with у.

    What is the date today? — Today is January 1st.

    New Year is celebrated on January 1st.

  3. Я нарадзіўся трэцяга траўня.

    I was born on May 3rd.

    Травень → траўня; трэці → трэцяга.

  4. Калі твой дзень нараджэння? — Дванаццатага чэрвеня.

    When is your birthday? — On June 12th.

    The answer uses the genitive ordinal.

  5. Урок будзе шостага верасня.

    The lesson will be on September 6th.

    Верасень → верасня.

  6. Сёння дваццаць пятае лютага.

    Today is February 25th.

    Only the last word, пятае, is an ordinal; люты declines like an adjective: лютага.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting the month in the nominative.

    Сёння першы студзень.
    Сёння першае студзеня.

    The ordinal is neuter (першае) and the month is genitive (студзеня).

  • Using the nominative ordinal for "on" a date.

    Я нарадзіўся трэцяе траўня.
    Я нарадзіўся трэцяга траўня.

    To say "on" a date, the ordinal goes in the genitive.

  • Using the Russian month name.

    Сёння першае мая.
    Сёння першае траўня.

    The Belarusian month is травень, and its genitive is траўня.
