у + Day of the Week
Days of the Week with У
У + accusative says on a day: у панядзелак (on Monday), у пятніцу (on Friday).
How It Works
The days. The day name alone is in the nominative: Сёння серада (Today is Wednesday). To say on that day, use у and the accusative:
- панядзелак (Monday) → у панядзелак
- аўторак (Tuesday) → у аўторак
- серада (Wednesday) → у сераду
- чацвер (Thursday) → у чацвер
- пятніца (Friday) → у пятніцу
- субота (Saturday) → у суботу
- нядзеля (Sunday) → у нядзелю
The masculine days do not change, as in the inanimate accusative. The feminine days take -у/-ю, as in the feminine accusative.
Next and last. An adjective agrees with the day: у наступны панядзелак (next Monday), у наступную пятніцу (next Friday), у мінулую нядзелю (last Sunday).
Every week. With кожны (every), leave out у: кожную суботу (every Saturday), кожны чацвер (every Thursday).
Spelling. After a word ending in a vowel, у is written ў: Сустрэнемся ў сераду. See у and ў. Day names are written with a small letter unless they start a sentence.
Months work differently: they use у with the locative. See months with у.
