адзін / адна / адно
The Numeral Адзін
Адзін (one) matches its noun: адзін брат, адна сястра, адно акно, адны дзверы.
How It Works
Адзін is the only cardinal number with a form for each gender. It agrees with its noun just like an adjective:
- адзін with masculine nouns: адзін брат (one brother), адзін дзень (one day)
- адна with feminine nouns: адна сястра (one sister), адна хвіліна (one minute)
- адно with neuter nouns: адно акно (one window), адно слова (one word)
- адны with nouns that exist only in the plural: адны дзверы (one door), адны акуляры (one pair of glasses), адны суткі (one day and night). See plural-only nouns.
Numbers ending in one. When a longer number ends in адзін, адна or адно, the noun is singular and agrees with that last word: дваццаць адзін год (21 years), трыццаць адна кніга (31 books), сорак адно месца (41 seats). This is different from два, тры, чатыры, which take a plural noun, and from пяць and up, which take the genitive plural. Адзінаццаць (11) is one word that does not end in адзін, so it takes the genitive plural: адзінаццаць гадоў.
Case. Адзін also changes for case, with adjective endings: Я купіў адну кнігу (I bought one book), з адной сяброўкай (with one friend), у адным горадзе (in one city), у аднаго сябра (at one friend's place).
Other meanings. Адзін can also mean alone: Ён жыве адзін (He lives alone), Яна была адна (She was alone). With an ordinary plural noun, адны can mean nothing but: У кошыку былі адны грыбы (There was nothing but mushrooms in the basket).

Common Mistakes
Using the masculine form with a feminine noun.
У мяне адзін кніга.У мяне адна кніга.Кніга is feminine, so the number must be адна. Check the gender of the noun first.
Putting a plural noun after a number that ends in адзін.
Яму дваццаць адзін гады.Яму дваццаць адзін год.Only the last word of the number matters. It is адзін, so the noun stays singular.
Using адна or адно with a plural-only noun.
У пакоі адна дзверы.У пакоі адны дзверы.Дзверы has only a plural form, even for one door, so адзін takes its plural form адны.
