Locative Endings
-е: на стале, у горадзе · -у: у парку, на рынку · -ы: у моры, на двары · -і: у полі, у гатэлі.
How It Works
The locative is used only after a preposition, most often у and на for "where" (see у + locative and на + locative).
Masculine and neuter nouns
- -е after a plain hard consonant: стол → на стале, лес → у лесе, акно → у акне, Гродна → у Гродне. Before this -е, т → ц and д → дз: свет → на свеце, Брэст → у Брэсце, горад → у горадзе (see tsekanye and dzekanye).
- -у after к: парк → у парку, рынак → на рынку, Мінск → у Мінску. Stems in г and х usually take -е with a sound change (бераг → на беразе; see г, к and х before -е), but a few take -у: на шляху.
- -ы after the always-hard ж, ш, ч, р, ц: мора → на моры, двор → на двары, пляж → на пляжы, канец → у канцы.
- -і after a soft consonant: поле → у полі, гатэль → у гатэлі, конь → на кані, жыццё → у жыцці.
Feminine nouns have the same form as their dative (see dative singular endings): у школе, у хаце, у Празе; на вуліцы, на плошчы, на гары; на зямлі, у сям'і; feminine nouns ending in a consonant take -і or -ы: у памяці.
Nouns naming people often take -у/-ю instead, whatever their last consonant: аб сыну, пры брату (forms such as аб браце also occur). You will meet them mostly after аб and пры.
