ад ... да
From ... to with Ад and Да
To say from ... to, put both ends in the genitive: ад Мінска да Брэста (from Minsk to Brest), ад раніцы да вечара (from morning till evening).
How It Works
1. A range in space. Ад + genitive marks where the stretch begins, and да + genitive marks where it ends:
- ад Мінска да Брэста (from Minsk to Brest)
- ад дома да школы (from home to school)
2. A range in time. The same frame works for time: ад раніцы да вечара (from morning till evening). With clock times, days of the week and dates, Belarusian very often uses з for the start: з дзевяці да пяці, з панядзелка да пятніцы. Both ад and з take the genitive.
3. Numbers decline too. A number after ад, з or да is in the genitive: дзевяць → дзевяці, пяць → пяці, адзін → аднаго, дзесяць → дзесяці. So you count ад аднаго да дзесяці. See telling the time for clock phrases.
4. Naming a trip. When you describe a journey out of one place into another, з + genitive and у/на + accusative is also common: Я еду з Мінска ў Брэст. Ад ... да puts the focus on the stretch between two points. See з for origin.
5. Да alone means until. Without a starting point, да + genitive gives an end time: Я буду дома да вечара (I will be at home until the evening). For a whole clause, use пакуль.
