Numbers Eleven to One Hundred
11–19 end in -наццаць (адзінаццаць, пятнаццаць). The tens are дваццаць, трыццаць, сорак, пяцьдзясят … дзевяноста, and 100 is сто. 25 is дваццаць пяць.
How It Works
11 to 19 add -наццаць to the unit:
- 11 адзінаццаць, 12 дванаццаць, 13 трынаццаць, 14 чатырнаццаць, 15 пятнаццаць
- 16 шаснаццаць, 17 сямнаццаць, 18 васямнаццаць, 19 дзевятнаццаць
Some vowels change because they are unstressed: шэсць becomes шас-, and сем and восем become сям- and васям- (see akanye and yakanye).
The tens:
- 20 дваццаць, 30 трыццаць
- 40 сорак, a word of its own
- 50 пяцьдзясят, 60 шэсцьдзясят
- 70 семдзесят, 80 восемдзесят
- 90 дзевяноста, another word of its own
- 100 сто
Fifty and sixty are written with -дзясят (пяцьдзяся́т, шэсцьдзяся́т), but seventy and eighty with -дзесят (се́мдзесят, во́семдзесят). The stress falls in a different place, and that changes the spelling.
Numbers in between are two words, tens first, with nothing joining them: дваццаць пяць (25), сорак тры (43), дзевяноста дзевяць (99).
The noun after the number depends on its last word: дваццаць адзін год (адзін), дваццаць два гады (два, тры, чатыры), and дваццаць пяць гадоў or пятнаццаць гадоў (genitive plural).
In other cases сорак and сто become сарака and ста (каля сарака гадоў, about forty years), while дзевяноста never changes. For 200 and above, see hundreds and thousands.
