-ै आउब

Knowing How to: -ै आउब

Level 3Sounds Like ̔ai ā'uba

For a skill, the person takes का, the verb takes -ै, and आवत अहै closes the sentence.

How It Works

Awadhi usually does not say "I know how to read" with a subject. The skill "comes to" the person, who is marked with का.

WhoForm
हमकाअवधी पढ़ै आवत अहै
तुमकाअवधी पढ़ै आवत अहै
ओकाअवधी पढ़ै आवत अहै
दादी कासोहर गावै आवत अहै

The verb at the end stays in the third person singular, आवत अहै (Lucknow: आवत है), because the thing that comes is the skill. It does not agree with the person.

The first verb is the purpose form: stem + -ै (पढ़ै, गावै, चलावै). For a negative, put नाहीं before आवत: लरिकन का साइकिल चलावै नाहीं आवत अहै.

Use सकब instead (-इ सकब) to say you are able or allowed to do something right now. आउब here is about knowing how.

Examples (4)

  1. हमका अवधी पढ़ै आवत अहै।

I know how to read Awadhi.

हमका marks the person, पढ़ै आवत अहै the skill.

  2. दादी का सोहर गावै आवत अहै।

Grandma knows how to sing sohar songs.

दादी का is the person, गावै the purpose form.

  3. तुमका गाड़ी चलावै आवत अहै का?

Do you know how to drive?

का at the end makes the sentence a question.

  4. लरिकन का साइकिल चलावै नाहीं आवत अहै।

The children don't know how to ride a bicycle.

    नाहीं comes before आवत.

Common Mistakes

  • The person must take का; it is not the subject.

    हम अवधी पढ़ै आवत अही।
    हमका अवधी पढ़ै आवत अहै।

The skill is what comes, so the verb stays singular and the person takes का.
