নকৰিব / নকৰিবা

Not Doing Later and Telling Someone Not to

Level 2Sounds Like nakaraiba / nakaraibā

ন- plus the future means “will not” or “please do not”.

How It Works

The prefix ন- copies the vowel of the word that follows, so it can be ন-, না-, নি- or নু-. Verbs with an apostrophe keep a plain ন: নহ’ব, নক’ব.

Verbআপুনিতুমি
কৰ “do”নকৰিবনকৰিবা, নকৰিবাঁ
যা “go”নাযাবনাযাবা, নাযাবাঁ
দি “give”নিদিবনিদিবা, নিদিবাঁ

To a friend, the request চিন্তা নকৰিবাঁ! “do not worry!” usually has the nasal mark. ভয় নকৰিবা without it is also correct.

For মই and আমি people mostly say মই নাহোঁ “I will not come”, which is the negative present used for the future. A form such as নকৰিম is rare.

The prefix goes right before the verb. If the object comes first, it stays before the prefix: খং নকৰিব, ঘৰলৈ নাযাব.

Examples (5)

  5. ঘৰলৈ নাযাব।

    ন- becomes না- before যা.

Common Mistakes

  • Put ন- before the verb, not না after it.

    খং কৰিব না!
    খং নকৰিব!

Assamese puts the negative before the verb. A word after the verb is a Bengali habit.
