Verbs Stay the Same for One or Many
Verbs stay the same for one or many.
How It Works
The Assamese terms are একবচন “singular” and বহুবচন “plural”. The verb ending does not mark either. It marks the person and how polite you are.
| One | Many | Verb |
|---|---|---|
| মই | আমি | খাওঁ |
| তুমি | তোমালোক | যোৱা |
| আপুনি | আপোনালোক | যায় |
| সি | সিহঁত | শোৱে |
Because of this, you need to learn each verb form only once. When you meet তেওঁলোক শোৱে, you already know the verb from তেওঁ শোৱে.
The noun carries the number, if anything does. Use -বোৰ, -বিলাক, -সকল or a number with a classifier, and leave the verb alone.
Examples (5)
- সি নোশোৱে।
He does not sleep.
The negative still uses the same ending.
- সিহঁত শোৱে।
They sleep.
The verb is the same as for সি.
- আমি চাহ খাওঁ।
We drink tea.
আমি takes the same -ওঁ as মই.
- তোমালোকে ফে’চবুক ব্যৱহাৰ কৰানে?
Do you all use Facebook?
কৰা is the same for one তুমি or many; -নে makes the question.
- আপোনালোকে ফে’চবুক ব্যৱহাৰ কৰেনে?
Do you all use Facebook? (polite)
কৰে is the same for one আপুনি or many.
How It Connects
Learn This First
A verb keeps the same ending for one person or many, so learners need সিহঁত and the present endings first.
