এই / সেই

This and That Before a Noun

Level 1Sounds Like ē'i / sē'i

এই is “this” and সেই is “that”: এই আমটো মিঠা “this mango is sweet”.

How It Works

এই and সেই never change. They do not show gender or number.

WordMeaningExample
এইthisএই আমটো মিঠা।
সেইthatসেই ঘৰখন ডাঙৰ।

The noun is usually definite, so you will often see the ending after it: এই কিতাপখন “this book”, সেই মানুহজন “that man”. A noun with no ending is fine too, as in এই কিতাপ “this book”.

With a person, the noun usually takes -জন or -জনী: এই মানুহজন “this man” and সেই ছোৱালীজনী “that girl”.

Another word, সৌ, points at something far away. It comes at Level 3.

To say “this one” or “that one” without a noun, join the classifier to the word: এইটো, সেইটো, এইজন, এইখন.
