সেয়েহে / কিয়নো

So and Because

Level 5Sounds Like sēẏēhē / kiẏanō

সেয়েহে means “so” and কিয়নো means “because”: নাজমা আজি অফিচলৈ নগ’ল, কিয়নো তাই অসুস্থ আছিল “Nazma did not go to the office today because she was ill”.

How It Works

সেয়েহে is built on সেয়ে “that very thing” and means “for this reason”. কিয়নো comes from কিয় “why” and answers that question: “because”.

WordIt startsOrder
সেয়েহেthe resultreason, সেয়েহে result
কিয়নোthe reasonresult, কিয়নো reason

In a long sentence the reason often begins with যিহেতু “since”, and the result then begins with সেয়েহে: যিহেতু বৰ্ণালীয়ে বিদ্যালয়লৈ বাছত যায়, সেয়েহে তাই ৰাতিপুৱা সোনকালে উঠে “since Bornali goes to school by bus, she gets up early in the morning”.

Both words are common in newspapers and essays. কাৰণ and গতিকে are the plainer words for the same ideas, and they turn up more often in everyday sentences.
