-리오
Will Not, Shall Not (Archaic)
-리오 is an archaic sentence ending primarily used in literature, historical dramas, or formal speeches. It creates a rhetorical question expressing strong doubt ('How could it be?') or a solemn negative statement ('I shall not...'). It is not used in modern daily conversation.

-리오 is a formal, archaic sentence ending that belongs to the 하오체 politeness level. It is almost never used in modern conversation but is frequently encountered in historical texts, poetry, song lyrics, and historical dramas (사극). It serves two primary functions:
1. Rhetorical Question (Expressing Strong Doubt)
This is the most common usage. It forms a question that doesn't seek an answer but rather emphasizes the speaker's strong doubt or disbelief, implying a negative response. It can be translated as "How could...?", "Could it possibly be...?", or "Surely not...".
- 그 누가 감히 왕에게 맞서리오? (Who would dare to stand against the king?) -> Implies: No one would dare.
- 이보다 더 큰 영광이 어디에 있으리오? (Where could there be a greater glory than this?) -> Implies: Nowhere.
2. Solemn Declaration (Strong Negative Will)
Less common, but also important, is its use to make a strong, solemn declaration of what one will not do. It conveys a powerful sense of resolve and formality.
- 내 결코 뜻을 굽히지 않으리오. (I shall never bend my will.)
- 다시는 그대를 보지 않으리오. (I shall not see you again.)
This is an archaic counterpart to modern expressions of strong negative will like -지 않겠다.
Conjugation:
- Verb stem ending in a vowel or ㄹ + -리오
- 가다 → 가리오
- 알다 → 알리오 - Verb stem ending in a consonant (except ㄹ) + -으리오
- 먹다 → 먹으리오
- 있다 → 있으리오
Because of its archaic nature, its use is restricted to specific contexts where a historical, literary, or dramatic tone is intended.

- 이보다 더 큰 슬픔이 어디에 있으리오?
Where could there be a greater sadness than this?
Orð fyrir orð: Than this a bigger sadness where could there be?
This is a rhetorical question. The speaker is not actually asking for a location, but emphasizing that there is no greater sadness.
- 그 누가 이 진실을 의심하리오?
Who would doubt this truth?
Orð fyrir orð: That who this truth would doubt?
This implies that 'no one' would doubt the truth, using a question to make a strong assertion.
- 적에게 결코 무릎을 꿇지 않으리오.
I shall never kneel to the enemy.
Orð fyrir orð: To the enemy never knees will not bend.
Here, -리오 is used to make a solemn, powerful declaration of negative will. It's a very dramatic and formal statement of resolve.
- 평생을 바친 노력을 어찌 하루아침에 잊으리오?
How could I forget in a single morning the efforts I dedicated my whole life to?
Orð fyrir orð: A lifetime dedicated efforts how in one morning could I forget?
This rhetorical question emphasizes the impossibility of forgetting something so important.

Using -리오 in modern, everyday conversation.
오늘 저녁에 영화 보러 가리오?오늘 저녁에 영화 보러 갈래요?-리오 is an archaic form used for literary or historical effect. Using it in a casual, modern context sounds unnatural and out of place. Use standard endings like -ㄹ래요? or -ㄹ까요? instead.
Confusing -리오 with a simple future tense marker.
내일 비가 오리오.내일 비가 올 거예요.-리오 is not a neutral way to talk about the future. It carries a strong rhetorical or declarative meaning. For simple predictions or statements about the future, use -ㄹ 거예요 or -겠습니다.

- -겠-의지, 의도 (-겠-)
-겠- is the modern equivalent for expressing will or intention. The solemn, negative declaration aspect of -리오 ('I shall not...') can be seen as an archaic counterpart to a strong negative statement using -겠-, like '하지 않겠다'.
Stig 2 - -ㄴ/는/ㄹ 리(가) 없다There's No Way That
The rhetorical question function of -리오 ('How could it be...?') is conceptually similar to the modern expression -ㄹ 리가 없다 ('There's no way that...'). Both express strong disbelief or impossibility, but -리오 does so in an archaic, questioning form.
Stig 5 - -오/소Formleg forn ending
Like -리오, -오/소 is a formal, archaic sentence ending. They both belong to the 하오체 politeness level, which is rarely used today except in historical contexts. Understanding -오/소 helps place -리오 in its proper historical and stylistic context.
Stig 5 - Spurningamyndun
-리오 is a special, archaic way of forming a question. Unlike standard interrogative endings like -ㅂ니까? or -아요/어요?, it doesn't seek information but makes a rhetorical point.
