maʼlum qilinishicha

It Has Been Reported That

Level 5

Maʼlum qilinishicha means it has been reported or according to the announcement. It opens a news sentence and is followed by a comma: Maʼlum qilinishicha, yangi koʻprik kelasi yili ochiladi (It has been announced that the new bridge will open next year).

How It Works

How it is built. Maʼlum qilmoq means to announce or to make known. The phrase adds three pieces to qil-:

  • the passive -in: qilin- (to be made)
  • the -ish noun ending: qilinish (being made)
  • the possessive -i and -cha (according to): qilinishicha

Together they mean according to what has been made known. Because the verb is passive, no source is named.

Where it goes. It opens the sentence and is followed by a comma. The rest is an ordinary sentence with its own verb: Maʼlum qilinishicha, tadbir ertaga boʻlib oʻtadi (It has been announced that the event will take place tomorrow).

Naming the source. To say who announced it, use the active verb with the source first: Vazirlik maʼlum qilishicha (as the ministry announced). Xabar berishicha (as reported by) has the same shape.

Similar openers. News writers build other openers the same way: aytilishicha (it is said that) and taʼkidlanishicha (it was stressed that). Do not mix it up with maʼlumki, which means as is well known and does not report news.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the active form when no source is named or already mentioned.

Maʼlum qilishicha, yangi koʻprik kelasi yili ochiladi.
Maʼlum qilinishicha, yangi koʻprik kelasi yili ochiladi.

The -i in qilishicha points to someone who made the announcement, so that source must be named, as in Vazirlik maʼlum qilishicha, or already mentioned. With no source at all, use the passive qilinishicha.

  • Using maʼlumki to report news (meant: it has been announced that the bridge will open next year).

Maʼlumki, yangi koʻprik kelasi yili ochiladi.
Maʼlum qilinishicha, yangi koʻprik kelasi yili ochiladi.

Maʼlumki means as is well known, so it treats the news as something everyone already knows. Maʼlum qilinishicha reports a new announcement.
