How It Works

1. After the word
Uchun always follows the word it belongs to: siz uchun (for you), bolalar uchun (for children), Oʻzbekiston uchun (for Uzbekistan).

2. Basic form before uchun
Nouns and personal pronouns take no ending before uchun: men uchun, sen uchun, biz uchun, siz uchun, ular uchun. For u you will hear both u uchun and uning uchun. The pointing words bu and shu usually take -ning: buning uchun (for this), So, Therefore (so, therefore). In casual speech you will also hear shu uchun.

3. What uchun can mean

  • Who it is for: Onam uchun gul oldim. (I bought flowers for my mother.)
  • What it is for: Buning uchun pul kerak. (You need money for this.)
  • In someone's view: Men uchun bu juda qiyin. (For me, this is very hard.)
  • Thanks for something: Hamma narsa uchun rahmat! (Thank you for everything!)

4. Why: nima uchun
Nima uchun? means why or what for. See Why.

5. With verbs
Later you will use uchun after verb forms: In Order To: -ish uchun (in order to) and Because: -gani uchun (because).

6. Not for prices
For a price, Uzbek uses -ga: Bu kitobni oʻn ming soʻmga oldim. (I bought this book for ten thousand soʻm.)

Common Mistakes

  • Putting uchun before the word, like English for.

    Bu sovgʻa uchun siz.
    Bu sovgʻa siz uchun.

    Uchun is a postposition, so it always comes after the word: siz uchun.

  • Adding -ga before uchun.

    Bu sizga uchun.
    Bu siz uchun.

    The word before uchun stays in its basic form. Sizga already means to you, so it cannot also take uchun.
