boʻylab / boʻyi

Along, Throughout

Level 4

Boʻylab means along or all over a place: Koʻcha boʻylab yurdik (We walked along the street), dunyo boʻylab (all over the world). Boʻyi means throughout a time: kun boʻyi (all day long).

How It Works

Both words are built on boʻy, which means height or length, and also the bank or edge of a river or road.

Boʻylab: along, all over. Boʻylab follows a place in its basic form. It describes movement along a line or spreading over an area:

  • koʻcha boʻylab (along the street)
  • daryo boʻylab (along the river)
  • dunyo boʻylab (all over the world)
  • respublika boʻylab (across the country)

Boʻyi: throughout a time. Boʻyi follows a time word and means the whole of that time:

  • kun boʻyi (all day)
  • tun boʻyi (all night)
  • yoz boʻyi (all summer)
  • umr boʻyi (all one's life)

By the river. With -da, the same word gives a location: daryo boʻyida (on the riverbank).

Not boʻyicha. Boʻyicha looks similar, but it means according to or in a subject: qoida boʻyicha (by the rule), matematika boʻyicha (in math). Boʻylab is about space; boʻyicha is about rules and topics.

To say through or via a place, use orqali: Samarqand orqali (via Samarkand).

    Koʻchada boʻylab yurdik.
    Koʻcha boʻylab yurdik.

Boʻylab follows a noun in its basic form, with no case ending.

  • Using boʻylab to mean according to (meant: by the rule).

    Qoida boʻylab ish qilamiz.
    Qoida boʻyicha ish qilamiz.

Boʻylab only describes space: along or all over. For according to, use boʻyicha.
