orqali
Through, Via
Put orqali after a noun to say through or by means of: telefon orqali (by phone), internet orqali (online), Samarqand orqali (via Samarkand).
How It Works
Orqali is a postposition: it comes after the word it belongs to, and that word stays in its plain form (the basic case). It has three main uses.
1. A means of communication.
- telefon orqali gaplashmoq (to talk on the phone)
- internet orqali (online)
- pochta orqali (by post)
2. A go-between. A person who connects you with someone or something:
- Doʻstim orqali tanishdik. (We met through my friend.)
- tarjimon orqali (through an interpreter)
3. A route. A place you pass through:
- Samarqand orqali Buxoroga bordik. (We went to Bukhara via Samarkand.)
- Bu yoʻl bogʻ orqali oʻtadi. (This path goes through the park.)
Pronouns. Pronouns also stay plain: siz orqali (through you), u orqali (through him or her).
Vehicles. For the vehicle you ride in, Uzbek usually says avtobusda (by bus) with -da, or avtobus bilan with bilan. Orqali is for a channel or a route.
Orqali and orqasida. Both come from orqa (back), but orqasida means behind: uy orqasida (behind the house).
