یا
Whether One Alternative or Another
Name the alternatives, then state what holds in either case.
How It Works
The alternatives can be two states, two actions, or an action and its negation. The following statement applies whichever one occurs.
Subjunctive forms are common because the alternatives are being entertained rather than asserted. Choose their endings from their own subjects.
This use of چاہے is a conjunction. It differs from the ordinary verb چاہنا, and it does not mean that someone wants both alternatives.
Examples (4)
Whether you come or not, we will go.
The result holds for both alternatives.
Whether the route is long or short, we will walk together.
The alternatives describe the same route.
Whether Bilal or Maryam replies, let me know.
The alternatives concern who replies.
Whether there are few people or many, there is room for everyone.
The statement covers either group size.
