How It Works

خواہ can introduce each of two possibilities. The main clause then says what remains true or required in either case.

The alternatives may be full clauses or shorter parallel phrases. Subjunctive forms suit possibilities that the speaker leaves open.

The expression has a more formal tone than many everyday uses of چاہے. It does not ask the listener to select an answer the way a direct alternative question does.

  1. خواہ سفر مختصر ہو خواہ طویل، وقت پر روانہ ہوئیے۔

    Whether the journey is short or long, leave on time.

    The instruction applies to both alternatives.

  2. خواہ آپ خط لکھیں خواہ فون کریں، اپنا نام ضرور بتائیے۔

    Whether you write a letter or call, be sure to give your name.

    Two full action clauses are presented in parallel.

  3. خواہ موسم گرم ہو خواہ سرد، یہ مرکز کھلا رہتا ہے۔

    Whether the weather is hot or cold, this center stays open.

    The alternatives cover different conditions.

  4. خواہ بچے ہوں خواہ بڑے، سب کو ٹکٹ لینا ہو گا۔

    Whether children or adults, everyone will have to get a ticket.

    The requirement includes both groups.
