Both clauses can describe facts that hold together.

How It Works

The contrast comes from an expectation, not from one clause making the other false. A shop can be small and still hold many books.

حالانکہ can introduce the first clause or appear after the main statement. Either way, identify which fact the speaker treats as the obstacle or surprise.

Do not replace it automatically with اگر. حالانکہ presents a concessive fact; اگر sets up a condition that may not hold.

  1. حالانکہ دکان چھوٹی ہے، وہاں بہت سی کتابیں ہیں۔

    Although the shop is small, it has many books.

    The small size contrasts with the selection.

  2. مریم آئی، حالانکہ وہ بہت مصروف تھی۔

    Maryam came although she was very busy.

    The concessive clause follows the main statement.

  3. حالانکہ بارش ہو رہی تھی، میچ جاری رہا۔

    Although it was raining, the match continued.

    The ongoing rain did not stop the match.

  4. حالانکہ میں تھکا ہوا تھا، میں نے کام مکمل کیا۔

    Although I was tired, I completed the work.

    Completing the work contrasts with the speaker’s tiredness.
