کو + Infinitive + چاہیے
Saying What Someone Should Do
Identify who should act and then name the action.
How It Works
Use مجھے, ہمیں or a noun phrase with کو. Do not replace that phrase with an ordinary subject pronoun merely because English begins with I or we.
چاہیے stays the same in the simple action frames shown here. The infinitive names the proposed action. An unmarked feminine object can change its ending: یہ کہانی پڑھنی چاہیے means should read this story. The person’s gender does not choose پڑھنی.
The force depends on context, from friendly advice to a strong duty. A negated action can advise against doing something; it does not always mean that doing it is optional.
Examples (4)
- مجھے آہستہ بولنا چاہیے۔
I should speak slowly.
The person is expressed with مجھے.
- ہمیں یہ کہانی پڑھنی چاہیے۔
We should read this story.
ہمیں names the people; feminine کہانی selects پڑھنی.
- آپ کو یہاں نہیں رکنا چاہیے۔
You should not stop here.
The negative advises against stopping.
- بلال کو جلد سونا چاہیے۔
Bilal should go to sleep early.
A name takes کو before the action phrase.
