نہیں چاہیے / نہیں ... چاہیے
Distinguishing Need from Advice Against an Action
Noun + نہیں چاہیے → do not need/want it. Action + نہیں چاہیے → should not do it.
How It Works
With a thing, نہیں چاہیے can reject a need or desire: مجھے چینی نہیں چاہیے says that the speaker does not need or want sugar in the context.
With an action, نہیں before چاہیے commonly gives advice against that action. مجھے یہ نہیں کہنا چاہیے means that I should not say it, rather than that saying it is optional.
To say an action is unnecessary, use a clear expression with ضرورت نہیں ہے. Negation placement and emphasis can affect interpretation, so read the entire phrase rather than assigning one meaning to نہیں چاہیے.
Examples (4)
- مجھے چینی نہیں چاہیے۔
I do not want any sugar.
The object is a thing, and the serving context supplies “want.”
- تمہیں اتنی جلدی فیصلہ نہیں کرنا چاہیے۔
You should not make a decision so quickly.
The advice is against deciding too soon.
- مجھے یہ بات نہیں کہنی چاہیے۔
I should not say this.
The action is discouraged; feminine بات controls کہنی.
- آپ کو دوبارہ آنے کی ضرورت نہیں ہے۔
You do not need to come again.
The explicit ضرورت pattern states that the action is unnecessary.
