Infinitive + چاہیے تھا
Looking Back at What Should Have Happened
An action + چاہیے تھا → it should have happened.
How It Works
Use an infinitive with چاہیے تھا to evaluate an earlier action or situation. A کو-marked person identifies who should have acted.
This often implies that the action did not happen and can express regret or criticism. That implication is not a logical guarantee: the speaker may be recalling a duty that was fulfilled.
A feminine object can affect the infinitive, as in بات کہنی چاہیے تھی. Keep agreement with the relevant action and object rather than matching the person after کو.
Examples (4)
- مجھے پہلے فون کرنا چاہیے تھا۔
I should have called earlier.
The speaker looks back at a better course of action.
- تمہیں یہ بات صاف کہنی چاہیے تھی۔
You should have said this clearly.
Feminine بات is reflected in کہنی and تھی.
- ہمیں نو بجے پہنچنا چاہیے تھا، اور ہم وقت پر پہنچ گئے۔
We were supposed to arrive at nine, and we arrived on time.
The explicit continuation shows that the expectation was met.
- اسے اتنی جلدی ہار نہیں ماننی چاہیے تھی۔
She should not have given up so quickly.
The negative form evaluates an action as something to avoid.
