گویا
As if or in Effect
گویا → as if / in effect.
How It Works
گویا can compare the way something appears with another situation. This “as if” use does not by itself establish that the compared situation is true.
It can also present an interpretation: one thing amounts, in effect, to another. In that use, the speaker is drawing a conclusion rather than describing an imagined scene.
The expression often suits careful explanation or literary description. Its meaning is not always the single English phrase “as if.”

He was speaking as if he knew everything.
The sentence describes his manner without proving his knowledge.
- کمرہ اتنا خاموش تھا گویا وہاں کوئی رہتا ہی نہ ہو۔
The room was so quiet, as if no one lived there.
The comparison creates an impression rather than a factual census.
- یہ دونوں راستے بند ہیں، گویا ہمارے پاس ایک ہی راستہ بچا ہے۔
Both these routes are closed, so in effect we have only one route left.
گویا introduces the speaker’s conclusion.

She smiled as if she already knew the answer.
