Asking How or What Kind

Level 1

Use کیسا for an ordinary masculine singular description and کیسی for a feminine one. Masculine plural or respectful agreement commonly uses کیسے.

How It Works

Ask راستہ کیسا ہے؟ to find out what the route is like. راستہ is masculine, so use کیسا.

With feminine چائے, ask چائے کیسی ہے؟. The answer could describe it as hot, sweet or good.

For masculine plural جوتے, use کیسے: یہ جوتے کیسے ہیں؟. In respectful address, آپ کیسے ہیں؟ uses masculine agreement; آپ کیسی ہیں؟ addresses a woman respectfully.

یہ دروازہ کیسے کھلتا ہے؟ asks how the door opens. Here کیسے asks about the method. Distinguish that use from an adjective asking what something is like.
