اگر + Subjunctive
A Condition Presented as Possible
If this happens → choose what follows.
How It Works
After اگر, a subjunctive presents a condition without asserting that it holds. The result may be a request, a future action, or another possibility.
The subjunctive agrees in person and number, but not in gender. Compare آئے for a singular third person with آئیں for plural or respectful reference.
اگر can introduce other verb forms too. A subjunctive is useful for an open condition; a bare -تا form belongs to a different hypothetical pattern.
Examples (4)
- اگر آپ جلدی پہنچیں تو مجھے فون کیجیے۔
If you arrive early, please call me.
An open condition leads to a polite request.
- اگر کل بارش ہو تو ہم گھر میں کھیل سکتے ہیں۔
If it rains tomorrow, we can play indoors.
ہو leaves the weather uncertain.
- اگر مریم آئے تو ہم اس سے پوچھیں گے۔
If Maryam comes, we will ask her.
The result uses a future form.
- اگر تمہیں وقت ملے تو یہ مضمون پڑھ لینا۔
